Residency transfer period for domestic worker

A new ministerial decision issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor allows a residency transfer period for domestic workers (maids, drivers, cooks, etc) of three months from their arrival in the country.

This will allow domestic staff to transfer their residency from one sponsor to another within this period if they wish, without the need to wait one year as they do under the current law. The second decision extends the transfer of work permits from one employer to another up until July
15 this year, reported Al-Anba.

This decision does not cover government project workers, who need the permission of the owners of the contracting companies they are employed by to transfer their residency; they must also meet the conditions of ministerial decree number 135, which calls for a five-year waiting period before any transfer will be allowed.
